Jennie Barrese worked primarily as a photographer but has recently returned to painting primarily using oil and gouache. Her work tends to explore strange surrealist creatures and landscapes. Barrese also experiments with painting surfaces, often using finishes that give the look of more architectural elements such as plaster, vintage wallpaper and peeling walls versus traditional surfaces.
Through both photography and painting Barrese’s themes tie very closely to the artist’s experiences and her work is often intensely personal.
Jennie was born in Scranton, PA and received a BFA in Fine Art Photography from Syracuse University, in Syracuse NY. She lives and works in Brooklyn NY.
